Exclamation Barking at TV when animals are on

Hi,
My 1yo West Highland Terrier x Poodle has a serious problem. Whenever an animal is on the TV he jumps at the tv, barks (not a happy "glad to see you" bark) and whines & growls.

We've tried spraying a water bottle at him, which will momentarily subdue him and turn his barks into whines.

We've tried rewarding him for when we tell him to be "quiet" which will work momentarily as well. As soon as the treat is finished, if the animal is on the tv 1minute later he starts again.

We've tried having him on the leash while watching a show with animals in it and having him sit next to us and treating him when he's "quiet".

We've tried putting him outside when he barks at it as a punishment, but he'll just bark at the window as he can still see the TV!

I've tried standing in front of the TV and not letting him at it.

This has been going on for months and months, doing the spray bottle consistantly most of that time. We've got him to the stage that if we catch him running towards the TV about the launch at it, if we say "quiet" and if he sees the spray bottle he might not bark so much if at all. Except if the animal is another dog...then nothing works.

PLEASE help, as we really enjoy watching animal shows but can't at the moment

Hey there, thanks for your post,

It really sounds like your doing all the right things, just make sure whenever your dog is barking you loudly say "NO!" and then reward if quite. I know its hard but you really just have to be consistent, persistent and patient. Instead of switching methods choose one which works the best and stick with it.

Let me know how you get on,

Becks
