Default New pup from pound

Hi, We have just (2 weeks ago) acquired Daisy, a maybe 10-11 month old hound, shepherd mix who we are already in love with. She was doing just fine with training, and was ok until recently when she started being unable to hold her bladder until morning. There are a lot of elk bugles right now near the house at night. Also coyotes. We didn't hear anything to wake us up until I heard the dog come over to our bed about 5:30 this am. I got up to let her out but it was too late. she had pissed by the back door. This is the second time in as many nights.Up to now, she has been able to hold it in until morning. The things that have changed: We are treating her for an ear infection, antibiotics am & pm & otic medicine in the ear. I was training her w/ small pieces of turkey hot dog after the pills. I'll stop that & see if it's the nitrates which did make her thirsty. During the day, no problem, as we can tell when she needs to go out. She will walk around aimlessly & I'll ask her if she needs to go "pee" and she will immediately head for the back door. The problem is what to do during the night. I noticed that she wants to lay down by our bed at night at first, then later move to her own. Some kind of insecurity, whereas before she'd go to her bed when told & stay there when we went to bed. I'm thinking we should move her bed near ours so we can hear better, & she may be more secure, then day by day move it a little more back. Any thoughts that would help would be much appreciated. Thanks,
Victor (Daisy's dad)

Hi Daisy's Dad;

I could not help writing to you since I live in Beaverton, Oregon!
My last foster dog got adopted yesterday by a couple who lives in McMinville!
What a small world!

I am so glad to hear that you fell in love with your rescued dog. One of my own dogs is also Daisy and she was my foster failure (I adopted a dog I was fostering).

Now, regarding your inquiry, I would wait and see until Daisy finishes the course of antibiotics. She might have a bladder infection but the antibiotics will take care of that too. You might want to control the amount of water she drinks after 6pm or so and see how it goes.

A friend of mine's small dog was killed by a coyote. She lives in Sherwood. You would want to make sure Daisy is safe when you let her out when it's dark.

Please keep us posted on Daisy's progress.

Thanks! We moved her bed closer to ours last night, & restricted the amount of water she could drink before bed & all was ok in the morning. So far so good! Other training is going well. She drops like a rock on the command "Down" and will stay until I get out of sight & say "come" when she runs past me and in circles at full speed, so happy I let her come that she forgets about the treat at first. She's a sweet heart!: D

Hi daisy,
Antibiotics can definitely effect your dogs drinking urinating and other behaviors in unusual ways. Glad to hear things are going better already.
