Default Show dog training

Hi all,

I have a 5 month old male afghanhound puppy which I bought for comformation showing. I train with him every day. He knows how to gait, his triangles, his up and backs and most of all to stand on the stack. I have different people go over him and touch him as he seems to have this 'don't touch me attitude. Most of the time he stands very well in training but when we go to a show, the minute the judge gets near him he pulls away. I have tried everything to get him to stand but he just gets it in his head that he does not want to be touched and he won't stand. I have hold of his lead with one hand and a grip at the back of his head with my other hand and he still has the ability to pull away. Does anyone out there have any advice or hints that would force him to stand. I have to add that this puppy is socialized with people and other dogs daily. He has no problems going to other dogs or to people but it has to be on his terms. He will allow you to touch him when he wants to, not when a judge needs to. He has no problems with me or my husband, we can just about turns him inside out and he is fine. He is teething at the moment and does have a sore mouth and I tell judges that so that they do not hurt his mouth. No-one has hurt him or been mean to him. He was hand reared by his breeder as mom was not to keen on the litter. The breeder hand reared all 9 pups. His litter sister stands like a little statue but that is not through training as her new owner tells me she just does it. My pup is very wilful so I would appreciate any assistance.

Regards

hi vharris and thanks for your post,
You say your pup is very willfull, do you practice alpha training with him? Does he show signs of dominance. Also when you train him with other people touching him do you reward him in any way when he behaves well or tell him off/discipline him in any way when he is reluctant to be handled during training? If so how does he react? Sorry for all the questions just trying to get a better understanding of the situation.
