excited 10 mos old malamute

my mal may have a dominance problem that needs addressing. When she meets a person new or old accointence she gets excited. Wanting their attention she wants to jump on or paw them. non aggressivly, she wants the attention. She is submissive ears back tail wagging. In class she has to acknowlege every dog with a frendly malamute hello. She loves training. and will work well in obediance class and at home. her problem is she cant hold he excitement for other people and other dogs. She wants to play. need help

Hey thats great to here you have a lovely friendly dog and congrats on the odebience training it really does make it all a better experience. Since you are doing obedience and she has learnt to listen and respect you, you should teach her a "leave" or "calm" command. Train it to her as you would any other command and praise her if she calms down or leaves the person/dog alone. Since she is such a friendly dog I would suggest using the command and then getting the person to go over and give her some attention once she has left them alone, this will be the most fantastic reward for her as she is so motivated by attention.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like a real good idea. We have worked on the leave command by using a treat and having the dog refuse or take the treat
on the command leave or take. I never thought about using it in realtion to her excitrment. Would teaching the calm command be benificial, and what is the best method of teaching the calm command?
