Default Skunk smell

My dog Koko tangled with a skunk right before the 4th of July. 4 months later and she still smells like skunk when she's wet. I bathed her right away with the skunk stuff you can buy in the pet store. And then I bathed her every other day with it for a week because she still stunk. She got hit right in the face which makes bathing difficult because you can't get any of the cleaners near her eyes, ears, mouth or nose. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of the smell?

Have you tried tomato juice? It may be an old-wives tale, but I've heard it works. The best part, of course, is that it shouldn't hurt the dog. Of course, it may turn you off tomatoes for the rest of your life!

Good luck,

Tomato juice is an old wives tail. We did that to a dog when I was a kid and all it did was make the dog smell like skunk and tomato juice. It didn't do a thing. I guess we'll just have to give her baths when it's nice enough to let her dry off outside.

Thanks. I've never had a dog near enough a skunk to ever have to try it. I'd read it in the Terhune collie books when I was a kid and have seen it mentioned other places. Sorry it doesn't work.

I'm sorry too, lol. Seems like there's no solution. The thing that worked the best was the recipe with peroxide and Dawn dish soap. Too bad it's too toxic to get near their face.

Hey, CrazyCrayon,

In attempting to help someone else, I came across this website: www.SCOE10X.com

They swear their stuff will kill skunk odor. Even have a test sample which includes skunk, with a warning that the smell might make you retch. Take a look at it and see if it is what you need.

If you try it, let us know if it works.

Thanks for the KJD. I'm checking into it. Especially since Koko did it again yesterday! She's queen of the skunk dogs! I did find out through my vet here in Texas that Ivory soap is the best dish soap to use with the Peroxide/Baking Powder/dish soap recipe. It works much better than the Dawn soap I used last time.

Let us know if it works. I am sure Koko is not the only one that likes to take on skunks!

Yup. After two baths of the Ivory soap/peroxide/baking soda mix she was almost as good as new. I can still smell a teeny tiny bit of a skunkish smell when she's damp but when she's dry she's smells her normal doggie self. I hope she's learned her lesson after 2 skunkings!
