cleaning tears

My 7 month old maltezer will not let me clean the tears off her coat. The hair is getting gookey...any ideas.

Could you tell me more about the tears? Are they clear and liquid, or colored and thick? Do they run constantly, or only with some sort of irritant? And when you say your dog won't let you clean them, how are you trying to get them off? Thanks very much,
