Question Menstrual / UTI???

My 7 month old toy poodle, Sammie is showing some signs of problem which I can't figure out, which can be urinary track infection but am unsure. Can you help? Her symptoms are as below:
1. Frequent urination but sometimes tries to urine but nothing comes out. Also sometimes missed the newspapers and urinated on my floor. Her urine is healthy, clear and yellow. Not cloudy, no blood, no foul smell.
2. Frequent poops - more frequent than normal - about 3-4 times. Usually twice, sometimes 3 times. A bit loose but not liquidated, still slightly solid.
3. Weak - she doesn't seem to want to play fetch, her favourite game.
4. Appetite is still as good as normal.

Can anyone help diagnose? I have spoken to vet and they said it may be signs of her first menstrual period if urine is healthy and to monitor a few days. I am just a bit worried as she has been like this for the past 3-4 days... Any ideas??

Hi junecpg, and thanks for your post.

The symptoms you describe like many of those our pets show are difficult to allocate to any one thing without further investigation. It could be that your dog is just reaching her first cycle, that she is just mildly depressed due to some sort of change in her environment or life, or that she is indeed feeling unwell.

If you are still concerned I would recommend taking your dog in for a full consult with the vet, your vet should even be able to do a smear from inside your dogs reproductive tract and tell you whether her body is under going changes suggestive of coming into season.

I hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.
All the best,

Hi Sarah

Thanks for your advice. I've brought Sammie to the vet last friday and we are not yet able to diagnose what is wrong as the symptoms are unclear. Suspected upcoming UTI, hence, she was prescribed antibiotics and diet wet food.

She is much better today, plays again and more cheerful! Back to her old self. However, still have more recovery to go

Hi

I am glad to inform that Sammie is all good now and don't have the pee problem anymore. I guess it was an early discovery or UTI as it's not menstrual... yet. Will be sending her to be neutered early next month
