Question flea and tick products

Hi everyone, I am hoping someone can answer a question for me. I have a 15 month old male Golden Retriever. I have been using Frontline flea and tick products, which work fine, but recently my vet told me that I need to change to a different product so the dog doesn't become immune to the Frontline product. I have never heard this before and was wondering if anyone else has been told the same thing about any of the flea and tick products. The vet gave us another product to use, but the odor is so strong that the poor dog walks in circles smelling his butt and wondering where the smell is coming from. I know that sounds funny, but we don't even want to be in the same room with him it is so strong.

Is it really necessary to change products? Any info would really be helpful.

I don't know about becoming immune to a product, but I might worry about becoming allergic to one of the ingredients.
