Your cat may not know why you are correcting him
This is the piece most cat training courses skip. They are built on theories that “so and so” said, and many of them rely on punishing your cat whenever he doesn’t listen. What they never show you is how to make your cat understand what you are asking him to do, and that is the most vital part of getting any cat to learn.
Take house training. Anyone who tells you to rub your cat’s nose in his own urine doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Your cat has no idea why you are doing it, so he learns nothing about where to go. Punishing a cat in a way he can’t understand frustrates him and stunts his learning, which makes him harder to train.

Cats are very shy toileters. One litter box in a busy room can send your cat to the carpet instead.
Most cats will only pee or poop in a litter box placed in a quiet, secluded spot, away from family members and other animals. Crystals form in the bladder, can lodge in the urethra and block it, and the cat becomes very ill and very sore. At that point a vet is the only option.
The key to prevention is to encourage your cat to drink more and pee more. Keep a couple of full water bowls around the house as well as outside. Have one litter box per cat, plus one: two boxes for one cat, three for two cats. Use an absorbent litter your cat likes and replace it every 2 to 3 days rather than once a week, because the cleaner the litter, the more your cat will want to use it. Put the boxes in quiet areas, but never in a corner or anywhere your cat may feel trapped.
Make toileting as stress-free as possible and you protect your cat’s health and your carpet together. That is one tip from the book, and it is full of them.
